With so many different types of dumbbell sets now available, it can be difficult to find a set that really stands out from the rest in terms of both design and effectiveness.

Dumbbell design

Although dumbbell design could be thought of as relatively universal, there are a few areas that will often vary between sets and can really make a difference to your lifting.

The main area that differs is in the design of the handle. You will usually find dumbbells have a handle made from solid steel, which some sets will coat with a moulded plastic to provide a softer surface to grip.

While there are benefits to this, having an uncoated steel handle puts you in direct contact with the weight which will make them easier to grip.

The dumbbells that come with the Bodypower Hex set feature this uncoated design, which has also been tapered towards either end.

This tapered design has been added to better fit the natural shape of your palm when gripping the bar, which will prevent you having to adjust your grip when performing exercises such as dumbbell rows or hammer curls.[/one_half]

Another point worth mentioning with the design of the dumbbells is the way the weighted ends have been shaped.

The 6 sides and tapering design with flattened end sections ensures that the dumbbells stay in position whether you lay them on their side, stand them on their end or even rest them on top of the supplied stand.

Rack design

In terms of the frame design, although this has been kept very simple, there is also a reason behind every feature.

The wider base has been created to both improve the stability and to provide a larger rack space for the heavier sets of dumbbells.

As the frame narrows towards the top, the space to rack the dumbbells gets smaller. Although this is a space saving design, this also has the benefit of creating a stable shelf on top for resting one or two of the dumbbells between sets.

The base has been kept relatively wide at around 67cm to prevent the rack from tipping when putting dumbbells back, with rubber caps added to each of the feet to prevent damage to floors.

One final point worth mentioning about the frame design is how easy this makes it to rack and pick up dumbbells.

There’s no reaching under shelves to get to the heavier dumbbells like you have to with some designs. You can simply lift out the dumbbells and slide them securely back into their position when you finish lifting.
