The Withings Pulse Heart Rate Monitor and Activity Tracker is a small device that can be easily carried with you throughout the day. If you wear it through the night you will even be able to see how much sleep you got when you wake the following morning.

There is a wrist wrap that you can use to keep the monitor unit attached to your wrist while you sleep, and a cover that can be wrapped around the monitor with a clothing clip so you can wear it while running without worrying about it slipping out of your pocket.

Monitoring elevation changes and your daily step count

If you are walking up flights of stairs on a regular basis throughout your normal day, then the Withings Pulse will keep track of the total elevation your body went through.

One of the many training statistics that you can keep track of is the total step count. The World Health Organization has a daily recommended step count of 10,000.

Your daily step count is therefore measured against this 10,000 recommendation with a progress bar to let you know how close you are to reaching the target throughout the day.

During your running sessions you can use the Withings Pulse Heart Rate Monitor to also keep track of your total distance travelled as well as your time spent running and the total calories burned.

While you do get a lot of extra features with this activity monitor, it is still excellent at being able to check your heart rate.

Metrics tracked

  • Steps taken
  • Elevation climbed actively
  • Distance travelled
  • Calories burned
  • Last run: duration and distance
  • Instant heart rate
  • Sleep duration and quality

You don’t have to wear a belt or other form of transmitter like most heart rate monitors. Simply press your finger against the back of the Withings Pulse device for a few seconds and you will see the display light up with your heart rate measured in beats per minute.

Syncing the Withings device with the Withings Health Mate app

The whole goal of recording this information throughout your day is to monitor your overall activity levels which may lead to decisions being made about how you can be more active.

Being able to see this information after you finish your run or end your day is possible through the app for the Withings Pulse that is available for smartphones.

As the Withings Pulse syncs with your phone, you will begin to build up a clear picture of your exercise patterns as well as your sleep patterns. This includes being able to display in a clear graph both the amount of time you slept for, and the quality of sleep throughout the night.

Your Withings activity monitor will sync with your phone throughout the day, turning your daily fitness statistics into easy to understand graphs that can summarise your entire day in a single screen. This also makes it possible to track your quietest and most active times, not just throughout the current day, but also looking back through previous days of information.

Looking back through your past activity isn’t just limited to using the app though. By sliding your finger across the display on the main device you can cycle through the past 10 days of fitness statistics.
