Design features

York Perform 220 Cross Trainer

Being towards the top of York’s ‘Perform’ range of cross trainers, the 220 continues the design trend of being a rear driven cross trainer.

Similar to the 215, the stride length has been kept at 15 inches, making this cross trainer ideal for anyone between 5ft and 5ft 8 ins tall. The reason for the height range restriction is based on natural running stride length.

If you are taller than 5ft 8 ins or have a stride length of greater than 15 inches, then you might benefit more from the next model up in the range, the York Perform 230.

The larger set of handles has been ergonomically designed to better suit a range of grip positions, with a textured coating applied to the grip sections to prevent your hands from slipping during your workout.

If you want to isolate your lower body muscles, a smaller set of handles has also been added just below the display console.

These have been angled inwards to create a more natural grip position, which is also more comfortable when you want to workout using a heart rate controlled program and need to grip the build in heart rate hand sensors.

Front and rear stabilizer bars have been added at the base of the York Perform 220, with the front stabilizer also featuring a set of wheels to make it easier to move the cross trainer once it is setup.

Ease of assembly

Assembly instructions are detailed with exploded drawings and part numbers

Although you will probably only need to setup the York Perform 200 once, it can still be useful to know how easy it is to assemble once you take all the parts out of the packaging.

While the main base unit and flywheel housing are supplied already assembled, this still leaves the stabilizer attachments, handles, and display console support to be put together.

The remaining assembly is split into 10 steps, each with a detailed exploded diagram, list of parts required, and the tools need to complete the step.

The majority of the product weight is in the base unit, so once the base stabilizers are attached this makes it a simple assembly that only requires one person.

Although some of the steps require lots of bolts and washers to be put together at the same time, such as the attaching of the display console tower, the entire assembly is still possible in less than 30 minutes.

Display console design

The display console design is minimalistic, yet still intuitive to use

Aside from the actual running motion, possibly the most important area of design for a cross trainer is the display console.

This is where you will have the most interaction when setting up and adjusting your workouts, so it’s important the design is easy to use.

The York Perform 220 cross trainer features a very simple display console, split into 3 main sections; the display screen, the central dial, and the buttons.

The 5.5″ single-colour LCD screen is split into sections to help make finding your important workout information easier. This includes the time, speed, rotations per minute, calories burned, and heart rate.

The central selection dial effectively removes the need for any ‘quick select’ resistance buttons, as rotating the dial to change the resistance and workout settings is so quick and easy.

While the buttons are kept to a minimum, the York Perform 220 still provides you with the option to perform a basic fitness test, or even measure your BMI %.

After pressing the ‘recovery’ button, the fitness test starts recording how quickly your heart rate returns to normal after a workout. This then generates a score which can be used to measure improvements in your fitness over time.

Workout programs

York Perform 220 Cross Trainer

Similar to the higher priced 230 model, the York Perform 220 provides you with a range of possibilities when it comes to choosing a workout program.

As well as the standard ‘manual’ training program, there are also a series of preset, heart rate controlled, and user defined programs available.

Manual (1) – This option simply allows you to set a target for your workout. This can be either the workout duration, calories burned during your workout, or distance travelled.

Preset (12) – A collection of 12 workout programs designed to suit different fitness levels. These range from the light intensity workouts to more intense ‘hill climb’ training.

Heart rate control (4) – Allows you to workout at 55%, 75%, 90%, or a specifically set percentage of your maximum heart rate. The resistance automatically adjusts to keep you working out at the chosen range.

User programs (4) – Provided with 10 columns (as opposed to the 8 columns in the user programs on the York Perform 215), where you can manually set the resistance for that particular stage of the workout.
