The Mr. Olympia title awarded to the winner of the professional men’s bodybuilding contest at Joe Weider’s Olympia Weekend. This is an international bodybuilding competition that is held annually by the International Federation of BodyBuilding & Fitness (IFBB).

Created by Joe Weider as a way of enabling the Mr. Universe winners to continue competing and earn money, this has now become the highlight of the bodybuilding calendar for competitors and bodybuilding fans alike.

In more recent times the Olympia title was held for 8 straight years by Ronnie Coleman (1998–2005). This equals the record held by Lee Haney from 1984 to 1991. Phil Heath currently holds the title from the 2012 Olympia.

The first Mr. Olympia

[one_half]The first Mr. Olympia was held on September 18, 1965 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York City. It was at this competition that Larry Scott won his first title, subsequently going on to also win the 1966 Mr. Olympia title before retiring undefeated.

Placing joint third at the 1966 Mr. Olympia, the departure of Larry Scott and a greatly improved physique then led to the 1967 competition being won by Sergio Oliva. This heralded a new era in bodybuilding competition. At 5 ft 10ins and 240 lbs Oliva, nicknamed “The Myth”, displayed a level of muscle mass and definition, including a “V” shape of a large and a well-formed upper-body that tapered down to a narrow waist, unlike anything seen in prior competitions.

His upper arms measured nearly 23 inches and his chest measured at 59 inches, which tapered down to a 28 inch waist and two 31 inch legs.[/one_half]

Oliva would go on to win the Mr. Olympia competition in 1967, 1968, and 1969 – where he would defeat Arnold Schwarzenegger 4 to 3, marking Schwarzenegger’s first and only loss in a Mr. Olympia competition.

This is also when many bodybuilders, who are still well known and widely respected today, to set foot on the Mr. Olympia stage. Bodybuilders such as Frank Zane, Franco Columbu and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
