The weight plates

Bodymax Deluxe 40kg Hammertone Dumbbell Kit

If you are thinking about buying a new set of dumbbells for your home workouts, you have a couple of options available in terms of the design.

The first of these is which material you want the plates to be made from and the second is the amount of weight plates the set is supplied with.

There are two main types of weight plates for dumbbells, those that have a tough plastic coating and those that don’t. There are several major benefits of buying the non-coated versions such as the Bodymax Deluxe 40kg set.

Firstly the weight plates take up much less space. While this is useful for storage, it is more important for keeping a more natural range of motion through exercises where the dumbbell needs to be brought up relatively close to your body.

These exercises include dumbbell curls and dumbbell rows, where larger coated weight plates will force you to lift the weight at a more unnatural angle to prevent the plates from hitting against your body on the lift.

Another benefit of these dumbbells over coated versions is that these sets will often be supplied with a heavier range of weight plates. Each of the dumbbells in the Bodymax Deluxe 40kg set can be loaded with 20kg if you want to use them with the same weight at the same time.

If you want to use the dumbbells one at a time such as for dumbbell rows then there is ample room on the bars to load more plates. For example you could load all 4 of the 5kg plates and even a couple of the 2.5kg plates to bring the weight closer to 30kg.

The grip

The grip is another area that differs between dumbbells. This will either be a crosshatched design on a metal bar to improve your grip or a rubber material, with the dumbbells in the Bodymax Deluxe 40kg set being coated in the latter.

The rubber grip actually does have a few benefits over the metal version including a being more comfortable to hold and often being cambered to better fit your palm shape when gripped.

Why included dumbbells in your workouts?

While multi gyms and even smith machines are still relatively new to the weightlifting scene, dumbbells in one form or other have been used since almost the very beginning.

This is simply because they are an extremely effective and versatile training tool, allowing you to work a wide range of muscle groups from a variety of angles.

If you already have a weights bench at home then the number of exercises you can perform with the Bodymax Deluxe 40kg set increases dramatically, but even on their own they can be used for exercises such as the following:
